50/30/20 calculator
Enter your net monthly income and the calculator splits it by the 50/30/20 rule — half for needs, a third for wants, a fifth for savings or debt repayment.
How the 50/30/20 rule works
Popularised by senator Elizabeth Warren, the rule is loved for its simplicity: 50 % of income covers needs (housing, utilities, groceries, transport, insurance), 30 % goes to wants (restaurants, fun, hobbies, travel) and 20 % is set aside — first for an emergency fund, then savings, investments or extra debt repayments.
What if my numbers don't fit?
That's normal — on lower incomes, needs often take more than half. Treat the rule as a compass, not a law: start with 10 % savings and shift the ratio over time. What matters more than exact numbers is knowing where your money actually goes — and you only learn that by watching your real spending for a few weeks.
Calculating is a good start. Seeing reality is better.
